One of the most common issues raised by church safety team leaders is poor attendance of training events. This results in fewer events, poorer results from any given event, and inadequate performance from the team. The ability to plan training events that have significant value is indeed a challenge. However, it is essential if you want to compete with limited free time for your team members. The value of what you present must outweigh the value of a day of golf or fishing. Your members have busy lives, and their Saturdays are a precious escape from the daily grind. Training must include a mix of high value instruction plus team members who understand the gravity of their job. As team leaders, you are responsible for creating both. P. Lake
You will understand the importance of member screening and how to accomplish an effective screening process. Onboarding the “right” people is critical to having members with the “right” mindset which is the most important tool in their arsenal. We will define the term “culture of training” and help students understand how best to create it. This will be key to your ability to draw members to regular training instead of dragging them kicking and screaming into a training program.
You will understand the difference between teaching, training, and practice… and we will help students understand how to take team members from novice to experienced safety officers. Our instructors will demonstrate each of these phases in a way that can be transferred to your individual team’s training. Plus, we will help students learn how to use stress inoculation to determine weak points and how to take failures and reshape them into progress. This will be done through both classroom and hands-on exercises that develop individual skills as well as team dynamics in real time.
We will emphasize the gravity of the Safety Officer role… especially for those who work armed, and we will emphasize the balance of ministry and security. Why would you train a team of safety officers to look for hurting people if they are not equipped to minister to those hurting people?
We will illustrate the importance of operational confidence in the process of making good decisions, especially under stress. Closely tied to ministry and security balance is the need for every safety officer to have adequate confidence in his individual skillset.
The 8-hour format will include class time, hands-on individual skills demonstrations and exercises, followed by reality-based scenario training. All designed to give you the tools needed to build an effective annual training program for your team.
